I know the OLB's bring pressure, but wouldn't they be in better position than ILB's to cover tight ends and running backs? And if you only have a 3 man front, shouldn't the inside backers be concentrating on stopping the run?? I know that there must be obvious answers to those questions. I just don't know what they are. Posts: 926 03/19/10 11:25	Because in the 3-4 the goal is to have the 3 down lineman tie up as many O-linemen as possible and have your outside linebackers be the primary pass rushers. The OLBs usually line up a little closer to the line than do the ILBs. Since you have 4 DBs in pass coverage (two corners and two safeys) they can usually cover them on their own (man to man). This frees up the ILBs to either help in coverage if needed, or come up to support the inside runs. So in Samuels case, since he is fast and big, he would be a good fit to be an ILB. He can run fast enough to help in coverage, but is still big enough to step up and help on runs up the middle. This is just basic 3-4 stuff, you can get crazy with it if you want. With safteys or corners coming up to blitz, while a LB drops back to take his place. I actually like the 3-4, espically againt the spread offenses we see a lot of now. The only time I see it not being an advantage is against teams like Tech that run the option. If those ILB and D lineman are not working together well, you can see some yards gained up the middle. Thx jamc. And good point about Tech. We did an awesome job last year of stopping that dive play. And they say that's the key to stopping that offense. It will be interesting to see if Grantham goes back to a four man front in that game. And I'm sure you guys have been following the practice reports. It sounds like the defensive coaches are having to go back and start from scratch! They are working on shit that I would have thought Willie surely must have been coaching. Fundamentals, staying low, attacking downhill, stripping the ball etc. I love it, but it really sounds like this is all new to our players. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but what the fuck was Willie doing during practice last year??
