My wife and I have been expecting our first child. The due date was 3/11/12. Unfortunately, the week of Thanksgiving, my wife's health declined suddenly. She was vomiting at least daily and had severe stomach pains. The nurse hotline chalked it up to a bug and we though maybe an ulcer or early on, food poisoning. She went to her doctor on Monday for tests after vomiting and more stomach pains. They referred her to someone to do an upper GI on Tuesday afternoon. On Tuesday morning, they called me and told me to get her to the hospital. It seems she was experiencing something that reduced her platelets by roughly 80-85%. Not good. The solution was delivery at 25 week and 2 days. That was my Tuesday. It was a day that I will never ever forget a single detail about.
The baby girl's birth via emergency c-section was successful and took approximately 3 minutes by my estimate. My wife has since had a great and dramatic recovery and will likely be home Saturday, the same term as if it were following a normal c-section event, which impresses the doctors. Not bad for someone who can say she was merely hours from certain death. Our daughter will remain in the neonatal ICU until a target date of approximately March 11. We are hoping and praying that we will one day be able to bring her home. She is also impressing her nurses and physicians. She's breathing on her own, and even processing food. She is the smallest human being I have ever seen at 1 lb, 5 ounces. I can only find some comfort that she is in the best care possible at Northside hospital.
This year has been especially hard on me. I am not usually one to wish my life away, but 2011 can kiss my ass. I'm looking forward to a much more enjoyable 2012.
